A sleepy thank-you

Whoops! This post has been floating around in the dashboard and needing to get posted. Clearly, I can’t figure out military time when I need to go to bed.

Anyway, let’s try again.

One of the things I envy most about Jamey is his ability to sleep.

ZZZZzzzz...

This may or may not be an accurate representation of a slumbering

Somehow, every night, Jamey manages to read a little bit of his book before turning off his lamp and promptly passing out. (I have never witnessed him otherwise, but apparently he does suffer from restlessness from time to time. Whatever – I’ll believe it when he joins me in the midnight wake!) Only on rare nights am I able to pass out just as quickly. Most of the time I lie awake, fidget, put a pillow over my head, pull on the blankets, throw off the covers, roll over on my back, side, back, front, then back again, make a move in Words With Friends, check our site stats, then somehow exhaust myself enough to finally fall asleep.

Recently, I’ve found a late-night blog post does the trick. It clears my head and sets my mind at ease. (This post is actually coming to you from our living room after 11 p.m. last night. Kind of amazing that I then scheduled this post to appear this afternoon, so here you are reading it now. I just love the Internet.) Unlike Jamey, reading doesn’t calm my mind; I get amped up by the story, and the next thing you know it’s 4 a.m. and I have 34 pages to go. Clearly sleep is not an option once that I breach that point.

I get a little funny when people in real-time bring up this blog. It’s almost like they’re calling me out for having such a public confessional, but is it really? All these thoughts are things I’d probably bring up in normal conversation, since most of you are friends and family. (And if you’re not, creeeepy! Just kidding. Who are you? Can I tell you a little more about myself? Are you here to offer me a book deal? I’m all ears!)

In fact, I think half the reason I so enjoy blogging here is because I know you all are such devout and wonderful readers. It makes me so happy to share with you what we’re doing, since I hardly communicate with any of you on a daily basis.

So the next time you talk to me, ask me how I slept last night. If anything, you’ll just give me something to snicker at when I’m lying awake reviewing my day, since blogging is such a silly open-air activity. But I’ll trudge out here in the middle of the night anyway and gladly continue to post, because I love that you read regardless – whether intermittently, regularly, or at a level of devotion that I wake myself back up to come back and fix that affect vs. effect because I know you’re paying attention.

This is basically a long-winded way of me saying thank you for reading. Now good night, or, if this really is posted at that time in the afternoon, I’m probably off to get some coffee.
