Where were we…

Well, well, well. What have we been doing these past few weeks?

This might be the longest hiatus the blog has yet seen, and I assure you we have no good excuses. Jamey might, since he’s been on the road quite a bit the past couple weeks, which is why I’m getting this post in now before he gets home and is an evening distraction once more. (See you soon, honeybunch!) Still, we’ve had some notable developments that are worth noting in the wedding planning and life planning arena, in general:

1. My dress came in! I made a whirlwind trip home this past weekend, which resulted in a 6 a.m. flight out to Atlanta Saturday morning and a 9 a.m. flight back into Charleston on Sunday. However, the 27-hour trip was fruitful; my mom and I scooted off to the alterations lady, giving her ample time to have the dress altered and ready by the Monday before the big day (keeping my fingers crossed that all goes to plan).

2. Jamey and I became godparents! We mentioned this activity over Labor Day weekend, I still think it was pretty special. I’ve never been an aunt before, so the fact that Jamey and I are now beholden to a little baby niece until she is a grown-up is pretty cool. We even got a fun photo of the Monaclan:

The whole enchilada. Props to my dad for taking this pic!

Family Backgrounds: AKA The Gray Man

So as a part of Claire and I’s getting used to this whole “marrying each other thing” we’ve been talking a lot about our families.

One of the funny things about my family is that my mother loves ghost stories. When she was a kid -to hear her tell it- she had a pet ghost named Alice. The stories that my mother and her sister tell are both funny, and frightening, and probably why I still don’t like to sleep in the house they grew up in. The Grand Strand of South Carolina has been continuously inhabited (by non-Natives) since the 1670s. It’s seen countless skirmishes, slavery, a war, and all the other detritus & minutiae of human life. My mother says that these emotions and strife of people are what causes ghosts to appear and stay around a place. And since this is a woman who used to take all her high school friends on “Ghost Hunts” on weekends, I’m inclined to believe her.

When I told Claire about my haunted background, she was a bit apprehensive. But I have proof.  Continue reading

Soaking in the sun.

Sarby did arrive soon after my post on Friday, and we immediately hit the town for some Charleston fun. Somehow we ended up taking very few pictures (which, if you know Sarby and me, is very uncharacteristic of us when we get together). But in this town it’s hard to have your eyes behind the shutter all the time when there is so much scenery to take in and fun to be had, which is exactly what occurred.

Sullivan’s Island on a very hoppin’ Saturday.

This photo doesn’t really do justice to how many people were out soaking in the sun on Saturday. You can start to see the Sullivan’s lighthouse in the distance and the crowd farther down near Station 22, but I always tend to go where the crowds are fewer. Our area was just perfect, along with the sun, sand and company.

Our food expeditions were once again fruitful. Jamey cooked Greek burgers, which we topped off with feta and red peppers on Greek buns. (I don’t know where Jamey got these, but they were definitely a good low-carb option. Apologies for not taking pictures.) After a luxuriating day at the beach, we returned to a pork butt in the smoker – my favorite smoking option, of course – and polished off our meal with garden sours (oh, and you so know I documented this whole affair – future post to come!)

Great weekend once again? I think that’s a hearty yes. And this coming one is already something I greatly anticipate, but you’ll find out more about that come Friday.
